Steve Irwin dead
The naturalist and television star Steve Irwin has died in a diving accident in far north Queensland. He was 44.
Police say he was stung through the heart by a stingray while diving off Port Douglas.
He was filming a documentary when the accident occurred around midday AEST near the Low Isles.
A helicopter arrived with paramedics on board to try to resuscitate him, but it was too late.
Irwin's body is being taken to the morgue in Cairns.
His family are believed to be flying from Brisbane to Cairns this afternoon.
Irwin, who was was born in Victoria in 1962, inherited his love of reptiles from his father.
His father Bob was a keen reptile enthusiast and moved the family to Queensland in 1970 to open a small reptile park on the Sunshine Coast.
Irwin took over the family business in 1991 and grew it into Australia Zoo.
In 1992 he ventured into television, making the first series of the Crocodile Hunter.
When the program aired in the United States, he shot to international fame.
Irwin is survived by his wife Terri and two children.

I liked the programs but he did seem a bit odd. I thought he might cop it one day but I'd have put my money on a croc or a snake.

Yep,
I always really liked the guy (from TV of course) i think he gave a new face to some of the creatures that people traditionally say "get that fucking thing outta here!"
I have to say though i'm not surprised that a creature has pegged him. My guess is that he hasn't had the same experience with sea creatures and that things that are native to the sea can move like lightning where as we move almost in slow motion. Where as on land he could probably of predicted almost any creatures reactions in the sea... oh well
Wasn't there a hoax mail or something a couple of years back saying he had died from a croc?

HE was out there.. he just went and did it.. and he died doing what he enjoyed..
We had a number of staff in tears when we heard earlier this afternoon (about 2pm local).. hey only one was an Aussi..

Well..he kinda screwed himself over here with that stunt with his kid...especially so soon after MJ did the same kinda thing...after that he was regulated to the cheap stations...

That was media Crap... two words.. telephoto lens... If people cant figure that one out.. then they have learnt their science's from the 6 O'Clock Newshe kinda screwed himself over here with that stunt with his kid
Some bleeding heart was irked because he had his child in the pen with the crocs.. and the images looked really good on TV..
that incident was the croc in Steve's domain.. the Steves death was Steve in the Stingrays domain.

Whilst i do agree with you to some extent Undies and do believe that steve and the kid were 99.9% safe, there is always that 0.1% of randomness that is in ANY situation.
Please correct me if i'm wrong but...
Steve was in the crocs pen! Now although he was doing what has been done 100's if not 1000's of times before, as they say, it only takes one time... There have been plenty of times where Steve *thought* he was safe with Crocs... even the crocs he looks after and has known since they were babies, where something has happened that has required his lightning fast reactions to save an arm... or himself.
Now whilst IMO he was safe i do not believe he was sensible and he allowed his familiarity with the croc to get in the way of his proffesionalism and it is those times where you let your guard down that the unexpected happens...
Lets say for instance the croc was cranky for whatever reason (possibly didn't sleep well, mrs croc was snoring all night, heckler in the crowd) and he really didn't want to "play" that day IF he'd snapped then although Steve would *probably* of been able to handle the situation, his reactions, and mobility WOULD have been impaired.
So in Summary yep i agree with you Undies that it was some bloody paparazzi twat that just wanted an interesting pic to make some money and headlines and media blew the whole thing out of proportion, however Steve should really have known better. He learnt from the mistake... now some would argue the mistake was having the kid there and some would argue the mistake was allowing yourself to get papped in a "compromising" position, but thats a different discussion
