The place to kick back, relax, post general bullshit, and grill a few on the BBQ. Whatever doesn't fit into another forum would go here. We periodically go through and move posts to the correct forum, but we do charge a case of Beer every time we have to.

Canada is trying to attract skilled British workers to emigrate to the country to boost the economy and population.
Officials hope that superior public services and a stable economy will tempt people who have lost patience with the soaring cost of living in Britain, and the state of hospitals and schools.

Hector Goudreau, Minister of Employment and Immigration in Alberta, has been sent across the Atlantic to encourage workers who fit skills and experience criteria to apply for a fast-tracked visa.

The scale of the project has been compared to the assisted passage scheme which saw over a million 'Ten Pound Poms' migrate to Australia after the Second World War. It will raise fears that Britain could be hit with a 'brain drain' if significant numbers take up the offer.

And again

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... grate.html

Certainly made the news over here.

I'd get in too. The soon to be Mrs Asp is a teacher, we've both got degrees, not that old. Not sure how many infosec jobs there would be for me though.

I don't wanna be a scientist again even if that might be more appealing to the immigration people.

Canada has a long history of trying to attract highly skilled workers...because for decades the highly skilled Canadian worker has gone south to make more money in the US...
just like our actors, comedians, musicians go south to make it big and make the big bucks...so do our doctors, lawyers, and technicians...

etc...

so we have always had a need to replace that skilled worker drain by trying to attract foreign workers...

nothing new...this has been going on as long as I can remember.

I got a kick out of reading some of the responses in that link...truth vs myth

1. Canada does have an exceptional ' general ' health care system...the best all-round/over-all system in the world...but...our most skilled doctors and medical professionals ( our young, well-educated A list ) go south to make the big bucks...so..if you have something that requires the attention of a highly educated ' specialist ' you're better off getting and paying for that treatment State-side ( in the US )...

2. Canada is safer than most Countries....in fact the most dangerous/violent part of Canada to live in is mild compared to it's American Counter-part...in fact most Americans would find our most dangerous/violent part of Canada to live in to still be a very safe neighborhood...but...I very much doubt that when my children are my age they will be able to say the same thing

3. Racism...Canada never has had a history of ' black racism ' persay...even in the dark days of American racism Africans regularly emigrated to Canada and our Universities...an American Slave turned Reporter and proponent of the Underground Railroad once said that he had never seen a Church with black and white pews, both whites and blacks sat together in the house of god...never had he ever witnessed an unfair judgment in a Canadian court based upon race, that the judicial system truly was color-blind...or, that a man was refused an opportunity on account of his skin...
( in fact it was a court decision that kicked off the UR...a slave who had made his way to Canada had killed his master and one or two of his masters employees who were chasing him...the Americans wanted him returned...even threatened Canada with renewed hostilities...the Canadian court decided that he had committed no crime according to Canadian law and that he behaved in self-defense...this decision was the catalyst to the Underground Railroad..a black man killing a white man and getting a fair and impartial trial and judgment... )
but...our historical record regarding our treatment of the natives is another matter entirely.

4. The Weather...the most maligned thing about Canada...the fact is the weather in most populated areas is very good...eg. it doesn't rain all the time in Vancouver ( I lived there )...Regina is not so cold your nose falls off...
we have about 2 months of sometimes, but not always, unpleasantly hot weather, 2 months of sometimes, but not always, unpleasantly cold weather, and 8 months of mild weather.

So where do I go to apply for VBA jops then?

I reckon Canada sounds cool...
Somebody from London might be able to sell their small flat and come to Alberta where they can buy a detached house with a huge back yard and huge front yard for the same amount.

I lived in Calgary and been there several times...home of both my hockey and my football teams...it has always been IMO the best City over 250,000 in Canada...and the friendliest over 250,000...took me three calls from a payphone to get a job...we used to eat at the revolving restaurant ( Husky Tower ) every week...

of course it might have changed in the last 28 years.

Alberta is in need of skilled labour....and low on housing. It is in a boom...which we have all seen before. ....then it busts

Asp...think of it like a desert....where the only fresh water is being turned into tar ponds.....and there aint much fresh water there.

fricken american oil companies...

Basically they are shooting themselve in the foot...so to speak...cause with no water there is no life.

Now I live in" the land of shining water"....and we still dump raw sewage into it.

Ya think we would know better by now!

Our land\water is our greatest asset and we are raping it
Only after the last tree has been cut down

Only after the last river has been poisoned

Only after the last fish has been caught

Only then you will find out that money cannot be eaten

I definitely agree about the water...when I first went to Calgary the first glass ( and the last glass ) I poured out of a Calgary tap to drink you could see the crap floating in it :D ...

bottled water was still a fad at the time...but in Calgary bottled water was the only way to go
