Bitcoin/CPU miners, Oh My!
Just a heads up. Besides all the other junk flowing around out there, toolbars are being used to suck up your CPU cycles:

Anyone remember SETI and those nasty little SETI clients in all your desktops sucking up CPU and network cycles?
Yeah, more of the same crap.

You are probably lucky you didn't. They are so hackable and so not backed by anything. Currently trading a bit higher than Gold (and if you believe Pat Boone, you'll believe anything).
Still, there is no real value attached to them, except gullibility.

Re: Bitcoin/CPU miners, Oh My!
just been reading about BC production
you MAY have been able to produce them a while back using CPU, but not any more
one article I read had energy costs of rig to do the work @ $200 per MONTH to generate $20 worth of coin
now the rig that will chew up $50 a week in electricity is NOT a small home user rig, we are talking way above the run of the mill
so maybe we all should have run it a few YEARS ago, then sold up and retired
but then again, hindsight is always 20/20

Nah, we have some rasberry Pi's in work that we've "hidden" around the office so as not to be discovered, quitely mining away. Each one cost about £700 to build in total but each one makes £2000 every 10 - 12 weeks at todays BC prices. I wish I had bought a load of BC's when they were $1!
Drugs have taught an entire generation of kids the metric system..

As Bitcoin hits new highs, heists and individual robberies are becoming disturbingly common. In the second of the Infosecurity ‘Tales of the Cyber Underground’ series, Tom Brewster investigates the underground market for Bitcoin stealers and miners as crooks seek to exploit the rise of the crypto-currency.
How big can Bitcoin get? That’s the question asked by many right now, as the value of a single Bitcoin breaks the $1000 (£612) mark and the bubble keeps expanding. Cyber criminals are amongst those keen to exploit the rise of the virtual currency.
It’s no surprise then that November saw some epic Bitcoin heists. Bitcoin Internet Payment Services (BIPS), a Denmark-based organization, said it was hit by a massive distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack before its systems were compromised and 1,295 BTC stolen, now worth well over $1 million. Two other exchanges, inputs.io and GBL, have reported losses amounting to millions of dollars of Bitcoin each.
Individuals have been hit hard over the years too. Back in June 2011, one user, an early adopter known as ‘allinvain’, claimed they had been robbed of 25,000 BTC. More have continued to suffer. Many say Bitcoin provides anonymity, as transactions are done using cryptographic public and private keys. But it’s clear that like any currency, it can be stolen and without too much difficulty.

Re: Bitcoin/CPU miners, Oh My!
Well, BitCoin isn't doing well. Even the use of the currency for drug trade in Colorado isn't helping.
