http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/free ... 06642.htmlEveryone:
I just got a call from the owner of a hotel for which we provide
hotspot service. She says that a guest spotted the "Powered by
FreeBSD" logo at the bottom of the login page, and was offended;
the guest was convinced that either we or the hotel management
"worshipped the Devil" and refused to stay at the hotel unless the
logo was removed. The owner could make no headway by explaining
that the besneakered mascot was a cartoon character and was a
daemon, not the Devil. And she feared upsetting the guest even more
if she said that large portions of the same software are inside
every Mac and iPad. The hotel stands to lose more than $1000 if the
guest, who had originally planned to stay for a long period, moves out.
One of our tech support people also got a call directly from the
hotel guest, who claimed that having the logo on the page
constituted "abuse." The guest also claimed to be "losing money"
because she wouldn't use the hotspot if there was a "devil" on the
splash page. He didn't even realize what she was talking about at
first.... He couldn't imagine why on Earth this person was calling
him and going on about devils.
Attempts at misguided religious censorship notwithstanding, I don't
want to see one of my ISP's customers lose business. And I'd like
to keep a FreeBSD logo on our hotspot page. Is there artwork that
doesn't include horned creatures that might offend the ignorant or
superstitious?

Religious ignorance
I could have posted it in Cosmos, even the official Joke thread. This was posted on the FreeBSD mailing list:

Re: Religious ignorance
oh dear ...........
some people just have to be a complete PITA
assuming that access to and editing of said logo is available to ?
I, would, just for now, edit the icon to some basic text?
just a little "powered by.........."
without said icon?
then go looking for my trusty LART

Re: Religious ignorance
Yeah, it's just stupid. It's not the first time I heard something like that about the FreeBSD daemon.
Granted, the old logo might have caused some confusion to the uninformed but still...
I'd probably tell the lady that there is no image of the devil, nobody knows what he looks like because the devil can change it's appearance (at least that's what I understood from the Bible). What most people refer to as an image of the devil is actually a combination of various mythological creatures, most notably Pan.

Re: Religious ignorance
I just don't get fanatics...any fanatics, religious or otherwise.
Religion, however, has always fascinated me on a philosophical level because it affects so many people in so many different ways, across so many different cultures. Every tribe of people has had some form of deity, even isolated tribes that could not have been influenced by other tribal customs. A purely atheistic tribe never existed, even in isolated environments.
And even today, in light of modern science and knowledge, there are billions of people who still believe in some form of deity, even though no scientific evidence at all exists to support the theory of any form of deity existing.

Begone ye all!
Only the damned need proof! Those of us who are enlightened have faith.
Faith the universal lubricant of ignorance. Now available in 1 gallon drums.
The USA, the land of contradictions. On one hand you have some of the most advanced scientific and engineering people and facilities in the world, able to launch amazing devices into space like the Voyager probes or the Mars Rovers. On the other hand you have people who think websites are processed by a Christian evil deity (not all Abrahamic religions have the 'Devil') because there is a cartoon picture of that deity and that a book written 400 years ago is the literal word of God. even though that book was actually just a revision (1769) of a translation (1611), of a revision (Canon of Kent), of a revision (Lutherian Canon), of a revision (Vulgate) of one version (Not the African or Augustine or Orthodox or Syrian or Armenian versions) of a book written approximately 300yr after the events depicted within it (If that God is perfect and infallible, why did he need to revise it at all?).
Unfortunately your politicians invariable fall into the latter category.
Our politicians are at least just greedy and self serving. Apart from Blair who was greedy, self serving AND religious.

Tony Blair-Walking Eagle
On a recent trip to the United States , Tony Blair, Ex. Prime Minister of the UK , addressed a major gathering of Native American Indians.
He spoke for almost an hour on his plans for a Carbon Trading Tax for the UK and Europe.
At the conclusion of his speech, the crowd presented him with a plaque inscribed with his new Indian name - Walking Eagle.
A very chuffed Tony then departed in his motorcade, waving to the crowds..
A news reporter later asked one of the Indians how they came to select the new name given to Tony Blair.
They explained that Walking Eagle is the name given to a bird so full of shit it can no longer fly.

personally, I would have re-edited all versions of the bible so that the first words on page one would read
