Well...in about 3 years we'll know more and be able to better determine if our mind functions even after death...
The study, known as AWARE (AWAreness during REsuscitation), involves the collaboration of 25 major medical centers through Europe, Canada and the U.S. and will examine some 1,500 survivors of cardiac arrest.

5 years from now.....

*Breaking Headline*

There is no God! Dying doesn't lead you to a land of fluffy clouds or writhing agony! Turns out it's just a combination of hypoxia and endorphins flooding your system which produce amazing "out of body" experiences!

Athiests say, "I told you so you stupid zealots!"
Religious Persons say, "Na nanananananana! I'm special because a supreme creator force loves me endlessly! You're going to hell you blasphemer!"
"I am never wrong. I thought I was once, but I was mistaken."

Your brain works for 4 mins after death.

After that it rots.

Cell death in neurons is a remarkably unstoppable event when started.

How could the results of this study in any way prove/disprove life after death?

It's exploring consciousness after clinical death, which is not necessarily fundamentally the same as a spirit-divided-from-body afterlife beliefs.

The mind functioning after death would not necessarily prove the existence of at true afterlife just as the absence of consciousness would not disprove it.
